Description

Crispy Golden Fried Morel Mushrooms are a deliciously crunchy and savory treat made by soaking fresh morels, coating them in a flavorful seasoned egg wash, and then breading with crushed saltine crackers and flour before frying to golden perfection. These mushrooms have a unique texture and earthy flavor, perfect as an appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Soaking

  • 3/4 to 1 lb Fresh Morel Mushrooms
  • Water + table salt for soaking

Breading and Coating

  • 3 Large eggs
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 2 Sleeves Saltine Crackers
  • 1/2 cup All Purpose Flour

Frying

  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil
  • 4 tbsp Salted Butter
  • Additional Salt for sprinkling after frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare Morels: Rinse the morel mushrooms thoroughly, slice them in half, and soak them overnight in salted water to remove any dirt and impurities.
  2. Dry Mushrooms: After soaking, rinse the mushrooms again and lay them out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to dry fully.
  3. Make Egg Wash: Beat the eggs with milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Add the dried mushrooms and toss to thoroughly coat them.
  4. Prepare Breading Mixture: Crush the saltine crackers inside a gallon ziplock bag until finely crumbled, then mix in the all-purpose flour.
  5. Bread the Mushrooms: In small batches, take the coated mushrooms from the egg wash and dredge them in the cracker-flour mixture to cover completely. Place the breaded mushrooms on a clean surface or plate and let rest for 10 minutes to set the coating.
  6. Heat Oil and Butter: Heat the vegetable oil and salted butter together over medium-high heat in a frying pan. Monitor the temperature carefully to avoid burning the butter or oil.
  7. Fry Mushrooms: Fry the breaded mushrooms in batches, cooking each side for 4 to 5 minutes or until they are a nice golden brown and crispy.
  8. Drain and Season: Remove the fried mushrooms and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with additional salt while hot.
  9. Serve: Serve the crispy golden fried morels hot for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • If you have an abundance of morels, you can bread them as instructed, then freeze in a single layer inside a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw before frying as directed.
  • Other freezing methods may be available; quick research online might provide alternative options.
  • Leftover fried morels can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in an air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness.
